The 30,000sqm building was designed to provide office space for the City of London, with a challenging fast-track programme that called for a modularised steel construction. This was new in UK at the time and the team went to USA to study the new practices in North American large office buildings. The feature of the building is its central full-height glazed atrium, another highly innovative feature for early eighties Britain. External shading and planting was a prominent feature of the elegantly detailed, bronze-clad elevations, with upper floors set back. “spec offices can make a sensitive contribution to a civic environment and that even a huge office building can have a richness and delicate scale suggestive of the human beings who work within” Architectural Review
